Malo Gusto brief bio and early life

Malo Gusto is a French professional footballer who was born on May 19, 2003 in Décines-Charpieu, France. He is currently on loan from Chelsea at Olympique Lyonnais. At an early age, Gusto was into sports and his father forced him to play rugby back in Villefontaine, Isère. However, Gusto quickly switched to playing football and is now a professional footballer while earning his baccalauréat technologique degree. Interestingly, Gusto’s father was also a rugby player.

Club career and transfers

Malo Gusto started out his football career, playing at the ASVF before moving on to Bourgoin-Jallieu. After spending a year there, he enrolled in the Olympique Lyonnais academy as part of the under-14 team. There, he played alongside talented youngster like Florent da Silva, Yaya Soumaré, and Rayan Cherki.

Gusto eventually signed a deal with Lyon in December of 2021 and made his professional debut for Olympique Lyonnais in January 24, 2021. He came on as a substitute for Bruno Guimares in the 90th minute of a 5–0 victory over Derby du Rhône rivals Saint-Étienne.

Eventually, the teenage sensation signed a new contract with Lyon in June, to stay until 2024. Gusto became one of Lyon’s most promising new prospects back in the summer 2021 pre-season. He began the 2021/22 campaign as the official replacement for France international Léo Dubois. Gusto soon established himself as OL’s youngest starting defender in Ligue 1 ever since Samuel Umtiti.

Following his heroics, Premier League side Chelsea decided to sign him on a deal until 2030 on 29th January 2023. However, he is set to stay at his former club on loan up until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

Malo Gusto international career

Although Gusto was born in France, his family originally hails from Portugal and Martinique. Gusto began his international career by representing France at the under international level. He first played as a midfielder with the under-16 team then moved to fullback with the under-17 and under-18 teams.

Following the Covid pandemic, Gusto finally got to play for the under-19 team in a friendly in Slovenia. The event featured matches against Russia, Slovakia, and the host nation. Gusto started all three games and played every single minute in each one. He eventually earned the right to wear the captain’s armband as well.

Eventually, Gusto got called up to the under-21 squad on the spot and made his debut with the espoirs on October 8, 2021. He came off the bench to help his side secure a 5-0 victory over Ukraine during the qualifying round for the European Championship.

Malo Gusto started out playing as an attacking midfielder or a striker before his present role. He is regarded as a highly nimble and offensively inclined player despite playing as a fullback. While at the Lyon academy, Malo tried out playing a number of various positions on the pitch. These include wide midfielder, advanced playmaker, and right winger.
