Republic of Korea’s badminton sensation, An Se-young, continued her brilliant run at the 2025 Malaysia Open with a commanding straight-games victory over Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh in the Round of 16 on Thursday, January 9. The reigning Olympic champion and women’s singles top seed wasted no time, securing the win in just 38 minutes with a 21-15, 21-15 score line. An’s next challenge will come in the form of USA’s Beiwen Zhang, who triumphed over Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt, winning 21-14, 21-18.
Meanwhile, World No. 26 HS Prannoy’s valiant effort came to a heartbreaking end at the hands of seventh-seeded Shi Feng Li of China. After winning the second game and forcing a tie-breaker in the third, Prannoy ultimately succumbed to a 21-8, 15-21, 23-21 defeat in a grueling 82-minute battle. An unexpected upset unfolded in the other half of the draw as Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon stunned eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong in an all-Thai clash, securing a 21-17, 21-14 victory.
