The gazetted religious event is best known for its old age practice of ‘sandal’ offering by the Mumbai Police, know the dates of the Mahim Fair 2022

The famous 10-day Mahim fair which is held annually to honor Makhdoom Shah Baba has started from December 8, 2022 after a break of 2 years due to Covid-19 pandemic.
The event which has been organized every year annually ever since 1910 will be held at the Mahim dargah.
For those who are unversed, let us tell you, Mumbai Police first offered the sandal ordering back in the 14th century to Sufi Saint, Makhdum Fakih Ali Mahimi, whose grave is inside the dargah.
As of now, over 400 sandals are being offered in the fair which showcases us giant wheels, qawwalis, games and various food stalls in the vicinity of dargah.
While discussing more about this year’s fair, a Managing Trustee of Pir Makhdum Sahib Charitable Trust, Sohail Khandwani, who manages and looks after the Mahim dargah, revealed that the event happens on the 13th day of the Urdu calendar.
In his statement, Sohail stated that, “The fair normally happens in December on the 13th day of the Urdu Calendar. This time it is from Dec 8-17.”
He further revealed the scheduled event of the fair as he added, “On the first day post afternoon namaz, the police pick up the sandal, go around the area and then offer it to Makhdoom Shah Baba.”
The managerial official further revealed that the next sandal is offered by the management. He also discussed that the Dargah is clean in the night while devotees make offerings on the next day.
He also told the reporters that the sandal which is now offered by the DCP or Senior Inspector of Mahim Police Station, was once used to be offered by the Commissioner of Police.
This change happened during the course of time and due to various circumstances other than the Police Chief started to make offers.
Although there are a ton of legends, stories and rumors behind why Mumbai Police are allowed to offer the First Sandal but As Per the Folklore, the saint had helped the police officials to arrest thieves.
He had also helped them to practice an offering which started after his death. However, there isn’t any authentic proof behind this story or other stories of why police is regarded as the first one to offer the sandal.
As per Khandwani’s statement, it’s all just a precedent.
Let us remind you once again, the fair is being held from Thursday, December 8, 2022 to Saturday, December 17, 2022.
