It’s always a loss when a prominent figure in politics leaves us. Maheswar Mohanty who was a well-known senior leader took his last breath on Tuesday. Mohanty had escaped a fatal attack in 2014 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him close to his Puri home. In addition, he had suffered serious brain damage when a guy attacked him in Chandanpur, near Puri, in 2012, during a panchayat election campaign. Know more about this politician below.

Born on February 26, 1956, Maheswar Mohanty had a distinguished political career. Mohanty began his career in active politics after winning a seat as a councilor in the Puri municipality in 1978–1980. He was involved in student politics at SCS College, Puri, and then at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where he earned his master’s degree in political science.
From 1985 to 1995, he served as Puri municipality’s chairman for around eight years.
He served in the Naveen Patnaik government as a cabinet minister, overseeing important portfolios including Panchayati Raj, Revenue, Law, and Tourism departments from 2011 to 2019. Additionally, he held the position of the Speaker of the assembly from 2004 to 2008.
Maheswar Mohanty, a former minister and prominent figure in Odisha politics passed away at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife Bishnupriya Mohanty and two sons. Mohanty was admitted to the hospital on November 1 due to a cerebral stroke and unfortunately, he succumbed to it at 3:25 a.m. on Tuesday.
His elder son Sunil Mohanty lit the funeral pyre as thousands of people joined his funeral procession.
He had a notable political career, being elected to the Odisha Assembly from Puri constituency five times. He successfully contested the assembly elections as a Janata Dal candidate in 1995 and as a BJD nominee in 2000, 2004, 2009, and 2014. His contributions to the state will be remembered.
While expressing his condolences for Mohanty’s passing, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik called him a “popular leader with high organizational skills.”
‘As an MLA and minister, he was crucial to Puri’s growth,’ Mr. Patnaik continued.
