In a scene from the third season of the popular television show S*x and the City, Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda Hobbes are shown enjoying cupcakes with pastel pink frosting while sitting outside a charming New York bakery. That bakery was Magnolia Bakery, which went on to become a global sensation and even the origin of the 1990s cupcake craze. The renowned bakery is now visiting Mumbai.

Prior to the outbreak, Magnolia Bakery opened its first location in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar neighbourhood in 2019. They currently operate four locations in the city in addition to a branch that debuted last year in Hyderabad. The bakery has moved further west with its latest opening in Mumbai.
Magnolia Bakery has always wanted to come to Mumbai, but they weren’t able to get to the city as quickly as they wanted to because of Covid and other reasons. However, they have arrived at last. Due to its cosmopolitan vibe and a clientele that is aware of Magnolia Bakery’s cult following, the bakery will be in Bandra, the city’s hub for bakeries and cafes.
Cult classics edition with an Indian touch
At the Magnolia Bakery’s Mumbai location, you may indulge in all of your favourite treats, including cheesecakes, cookies, pies, cake pieces, brownies, and delicate cupcakes with swirls of buttercream frosting. The bakery’s second signature dish is banana pudding. Don’t miss the tres leches, a drenched dessert from Latin America that comes in more than a dozen flavours at the bakery and has been a huge hit in India according to Erick Larios, vice president for Magnolia Bakery Franchise.
To meet the needs of the Indian market, the company has developed a whole range of eggless sweets, including ice creams. A special summer menu featuring mangoes includes a mango cheesecake and mango parfait. There are also many other options available, all crafted with seasonal and local ingredients. They also have their own version of the popular Christmas plum cake, which is only served in India.
The Mumbai location will be the first to experience new ice cream flavours before they are introduced to other parts of the nation, even if the majority of the menu is still the same as at the other locations.
Drink a wide selection of tea and coffee
With choices like cinnamon and toasted almond lattes, as well as cold drinks like iced tea, iced coffee, iced Americano, Arnold Palmer, and more, the beverage selection appears to be equally as fascinating. Entering the bakery, you’ll be greeted by a mural depicting the original Magnolia Bakery storefront on Bleecker Street in New York, along with images of the city’s streetlights, the Sea Link, the Gateway of India, and classic black-and-yellow taxis. There is one more unique element that alludes to the location of the bakery and that is the iconic Magnolia Bakery tin ceiling getting a makeover with distinctive patterns that honour Mumbai’s cultural legacy.
Mumbai will see more Magnolia Bakery branches
Magnolia Bakery may take a while to reach other cities, but the company intends to build more locations in Mumbai shortly, much like it did in Bengaluru.
