They had previously competed against one another eight times, so their animosity was well-known. Keys outscored Kasatkina 7-1 in their head-to-head matchup. The Russian defeated her in three sets at the Melbourne Summer Set 2 in 2022 last time.

Prediction

The second round of the 2022 San Diego Open will feature Madison Keys, a fan favourite at home, versus eighth seed Daria Kasatkina.

Kasatkina faced Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open champion, in the first round. She swiftly moved out to a 4-0 lead while her challenger struggled to catch up. The Canadian was unable to close the margin, as the World No. 11 took the opening set.

The Russian got off to a fast start in the second set as well, leading 3-0. Fernandez successfully broke Kasatkina’s serve for the first time in the match, making the score 3-1. However, the Canadian did not start one of his customary bouts, losing serve in the next game right after. No more mistakes were made by Kasatkina, who quickly served out the match to win 6-2, 6-2.

In the first round in San Diego, Keys competed against qualifier Ellen Perez. The American was fairly dominant in the opening set, dropping just one game along route to taking it. Perez reversed the course of play while she was up 3-0 in the second set.

The match seemed like it would go the distance because Keys’ level seemed to be falling a little. The former US Open finalist, though, quickly put things right. The next two games were won by her, bringing the score to 3-2. Keys broke a three-match losing run by winning the match 6-1, 6-4 after the Australian gained another service break to take the lead at 4-2.

In the opening round, Kasatkina showed some initiative by playing a slightly more aggressive style of tennis than normal. She may struggle to compete with Keys in that area given his penchant for making brash shots. But the Russian’s style of play is better suited to Center Court’s heavy bounce.

Despite neither player having been at their best lately, their victories here will give them more self-confidence. Kasatkina is more dependable, so if the American doesn’t keep her error rate under control, she can run into issues. However, considering their lopsided head-to-head record, it’s difficult to support Keys in her quest for yet another victory.
