Due to the importance of that tie, neither coach will want to be without any of their best players, but recent news out of Spain suggests Los Blancos may be in that exact situation for the first leg.
As the reigning Spanish champions prepare for their toughest test of the year, the most latest details on Luka Modric’s health are available here.
Luka Modric injury update: Which injury is the Real Madrid midfielder dealing with?
Tuesday’s La Liga match between Real and Girona turned out to be much more costly than they had anticipated.
Los Blancos not only lost 4-2, with Valentin Castellanos scoring all four goals for the team in tenth place, but Modric also sustained an injury.
The condition is described by Real as a “left leg injury,” which at least suggests that it isn’t something more serious like a groin or hamstring strain.
Real Madrid head coach, Carlo Amcelotti in a press conference said:
The truth is that Modric picked up a small injury in Girona, he’s awaiting his progress and I don’t know if he’s going to make it to the cup final.”
He further continued:
Clearly we are hurt but in football it can happen.”
Given that Modric has played for Real 44 times this season, the team has clearly suffered. He must be able to manage the tempo and send players to the wings like Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.
Ancelotti was asked which of his available midfielders would be best suited to take Modric’s place in the starting lineup. He said:
In terms of characteristics it’s [Dani] Ceballos. But we have different resources.”
He added:
We have very good midfielders: Camavinga, Tchouameni, Valverde…I have midfielders of the highest level.”
Which matches can Luka Modric miss?
Real fans are concentrating on the Man City game, but they also have other things on their minds.
Modric won’t participate in the Copa del Rey title game as well as he will surely miss Saturday’s La Liga encounter against Almeria.
Real Madrid will play Osasuna in the championship game after decisively defeating Barcelona in the semifinals.
On May 6, the game will go place, but Ancelotti’s team will try to get through it without Modric.
The next game is the first leg of the semifinals of the Champions League against City. The fact that the club has not ruled Modric out for that game indicates that he is clearly hoping to play in it.
It will be a really challenging task, though, and City might gain from his absence.
Without Modric’s experience with the UCL, Real would have a significant issue because they lack a player with his kind of understanding.
The Ballon d’Or winner is superior to Ceballos, despite the latter’s high level of skill in the middle.
