Lt Gen Baggavalli Somashekar Raju was named Vice Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army on Friday. From May 1, 2022, he will be in charge. He will succeed Lt Gen Manoj Pande, who was named the Army’s 29th Chief of Staff on April 18.

General MM Naravane #COAS & All Ranks of #IndianArmy congratulate Lieutenant General BS Raju on being appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff #VCOAS of #IndianArmy. Lt Gen BS Raju will assume the appointment of #VCOAS on 01 May 2022.
He was previously the Srinagar Corps Commander and is now the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) at Army headquarters. According to reports, this will be the first time a three-star commander would take over as Vice Chief before serving as Army Commander.
Who Is BS Raju?
Lieutenant General Baggavalli Somashekar Raju, UYSM, AVSM, YSM was born on October 19, 1963 and is aged 58 years at the moment. He is a current Indian Army general officer. He is the 44th Vice Chief of the Army Staff at the moment. He was the Director-General of Military Operations at the time (DGMO).
Raju was born in Davanagere, into a family that can be traced back to Baggavalli village near Ajjampura in the Chikmagalur district. Raju attended Bijapur’s Sainik School and Pune’s National Defence Academy.
He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, New Zealand. He also finished his Master’s degree in Counter-Terrorism at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
He is married to Shakuntala Raju, a Karnataka native, and they have a son and a daughter together.
His Career
From 1 March 2020 until 17 March 2021, Raju was the 49th Commander of the XV Corps (Chinar Corps), succeeding Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon, UYSM, YSM, and VSM.
He was the Director-General of Staff Duties at Army Headquarters before taking up command of the Chinar Corps. Since 1 February 2021, he has been the Colonel of the Jat Regiment, succeeding Lieutenant General S K Saini, the Vice Chief of Army Staff.
He has held the positions of brigade major of an infantry brigade and Colonel Military Secretary (Legal) at Army Headquarters.
In December 1984, he was commissioned into the Jat Regiment’s 11th battalion (11 Jat). He then became the commander of the Jat Regiment’s 15th Battalion (15 JAT).
Prior to taking command of the XV Corps, he was the Commandant of the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan.
From 28 March 2017 until 1 April 2018, he headed the elite Counter Insurgency Force following the assassination of Burhan Wani, the Hizbul Mujahideen’s poster boy.
