The accident was reported to have happened around 1:30 pm on Interstate 55, just north of the boundary between Louisiana and Mississippi. Law enforcement confirmed that the deadly incident in the area resulted in the unfortunate passing of the esteemed Catholic priest.

Early reports from the Mississippi Highway Patrol indicate that Father Mark was traveling south on Interstate 55 when his car veered off, striking a median. This unfortunate action caused the vehicle to collide into a culvert, which ultimately resulted in its overturning. The immediate aftermath saw Father Mark Beard losing his life due to the intensity of the crash.
Those close to Father Mark revealed to local news outlets that he frequently visited his property located in Mississippi. In memory of the pastor, St. Helena Catholic Church held a Rosary on the evening of the accident.

A native of Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Father Mark Beard’s early life saw him graduate from Baton Rouge’s Catholic High School and later pursue further studies at Louisiana State University (LSU). Interestingly, a vacation trip marked the turning point in his decision to embrace priesthood. Throughout his time in Amite, his notable charitable work and genuine care for others were evident, leaving a lasting impact on many.
In a decade-old interview with Medjugorje Miracles, Father Mark opened up about a transformative journey he had in Medjugorje, located in Herzegovina and Bosnia. Initially a skeptic, his visit to the village altered the course of his life, leading him to embrace Catholicism wholeheartedly. Since being ordained in 2009, Father Mark became an essential figure in Amite’s religious community, even delivering benedictions at two inaugurations for Governor John Bel Edwards. His last sermon was just days before the accident, on July 30.
