Five new sports list including cricket will be added in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as per International Olympic Committee (IOC)

Following its exclusion from the mega-event in 1990, cricket will now be included in the 2028 Los Angeles games, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during its session in Mumbai.

In addition to T20 cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash, and baseball/softball were among the eight sports authorised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its 141st session.

Proposals to include baseball-softball, flag football, and lacrosse were also made by the LA Games organisers; these were approved at an IOC meeting in Mumbai. It is noteworthy that each host city may propose to have many sports included to their version of the Games in accordance with IOC regulations.

IOC on X (formerly known as Twitter) said:

The proposal from the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (@LA28) to include five new sports in the programme has been accepted by the IOC Session.
Further was said:

Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash will be in the programme at LA28.”

The recommendation for the five sports was approved by the IOC Executive Board, which has the authority, last week. About ninety IOC members cast two “no” votes, and all five sports were approved as a single package.

There has only ever been one cricket match at the Olympics, which took place in Paris in 1900 and saw England overcome France.

Meanwhile, Softball and baseball have been featured in the Olympic programming in multiple editions, the most recent being Tokyo 2020. Lacrosse was a part of the schedule in London in 1908 and St. Louis in 1904 while LA28 will mark the Olympic debuts of squash and flag football.

Meanwhile, The IOC has suggested that skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing;which were originally planned to be optional sports for the 2020 and 2024 Games; be promoted in place of boxing, modern pentathlon, and weightlifting in the programme of 28 “core” Olympic events.

Los Angeles, which has already held the Summer Olympics twice in 1932 and 1984, will tie London and Paris for the most three-time hosting cities history. It is also the first city in the Americas to do so.

Los Angeles previously hosted the Games in 1932 and 1984 and this time around, the city likely will kick off the games at a venue built for the 1932 event: the Coliseum. It will be part of what 2028 organizers are calling the Downtown Sports Park, a collection of venues that includes Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center), the Convention Center, the L.A. Football Club Stadium, USC’s Galen Center and Microsoft Theater.
