Head to Head: 2-1

Sonego has won two of the three meetings between the two, giving him the advantage in their head-to-head record.

All three encounters took place the previous year, with Korda prevailing on the clay in Parma while Sonego prevailed on the hard courts in Montpellier and San Diego.

Prediction

In the 2022 Moselle Open quarterfinal, Italian Lorenzo Sonego, ranked 65th in the world, will compete against American Sebastian Korda, ranked 49th.

Sonego started his campaign in Metz by pulling off a minor shock by defeating the seventh-seeded Aslan Karatsev, setting up a second-round matchup with the seasoned Gilles Simon. And the Italian suddenly found himself pitted as the antagonist of the story against a player who was competing in one of his last tournaments before quitting and who had the warm support of the home crowd.

Sonego had the lone break point in the opening set, but he couldn’t convert it, therefore the match proceeded to a tiebreak, which Sonego eventually won. Then, in the second set, he won an early break, which he followed up with another. Simon, to his credit, immediately fought back, but his race and tournament went on regardless of his efforts.

On the other hand, 2021 was a breakthrough year for Korda, who placed second in Delray Beach before taking home his first senior championship on clay in Italy. His performance was also strong enough to get him a spot in the season-ending NextGen Finals in Milan, where he advanced to the final but lost to Carlos Alcaraz, who later rose to the top of the world rankings.

Even though 2022 hasn’t yet reached those heights, he has now advanced to his fourth quarterfinal of the year after winning two straight sets in France. His first set victory came over local Hugo Gaston, the world’s 79th-ranked player, even though their match went to a second set tie-break. With Lorenzo Musetti, another Italian, he was forced to a tie, and the outcome of that game was largely the same as his first. He won the first set with just one serve break, and in the second set tie-break, he triumphed over his rival.

Despite their head-to-head record suggesting otherwise, Korda is clearly the favourite for this encounter.
