The London Marathon History, Raised Charitable Amount, And Race Track Details
Every year, the London Marathon is held in London, United Kingdom. It was started in 1981 by sportsmen Chris Brasher and John Disley. Normally scheduled in April, it will instead take place in October in 2021 and 2022 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The track, which is generally flat, circles the River Thames; it begins at Blackheath and ends at The Mall. The current Race Director is Nick Bitel, son of Chris, and the Chief Executive is Hugh Brasher.
The race consists of several different events, including a mass race open to the general public, professional long-distance races for men and women, elite wheelchair races for men and women, and a 3-mile mini marathon for athletes under the age of 17. The mass race is the third-biggest running event and the country’s largest marathon behind the Great North Run and Great Manchester Run.
The marathon has a large charitable component, with runners contributing to raise more than $1 billion since its inception, including £66.4 million at the 2019 London Marathon, which set a record for the most money raised in a single day.
This year, there is a total prize purse of $313,000, with $55,000 each for the men’s and women’s winner and additional prizes will go to athletes that run a certain time or break a course record.

The London Marathon Number of Participants, Most Successful Countries, Prize Money, And Other Details
The London Marathon has been won by twenty British competitors forty times in total. David Weir’s victory in the men’s wheelchair race at the 2012 London Marathon was the most recent triumph for a British competitor. He had won six times in London. Kenya has the second-highest number of Olympic medal winners.
A total of eighteen Kenyans—seven men and seven women—have won in the category for the physically fit. Eleven men, including competitors in wheelchair races, have taken first place in the marathon more than once; Weir holds the record with six victories. Six times between 1992 and 2002, Tanni Grey-Thompson won the women’s wheelchair race, making sixteen women multi-victorious.
Each of the five races that make up the World Marathon Majors has a mass participation field that runs the same course as the elites, an international elite field for both men and women, takes place in a significant international market, has a history of at least 25 years, and is regarded as one of the best in the business. Together, the group draws 300,000 applicants, 150,000 participants, more than 5 million on-course spectators, and more than 250 million television viewers each year. Additionally, it has a global economic impact of more than $400 million and raises more than $80 million for charity.
