Liverpool FC You’ll Never Walk Alone (YNWA) Songwriter
Oscar Hammerstein II is the person who wrote the lyrics for the iconic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone song, while Richard Rodgers composed the music for it. The duo came up with the son as part of their 1945 Broadway musical Carousel. Gerry and the Pacemakers later covered the song in 1963, with their version hitting number one on the UK charts. The song stayed up top for four weeks and eventually got embedded in Liverpool’s cultural fabric. Gerry Marsden, who was the band’s frontman, even presented a copy of the single to legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly.
You’ll Never Walk Alone (YNWA) adoption
Liverpool FC fans notably began singing the iconic song during the early 1960s. According to reports, Shankly got so moved by the track during a pre-season trip that it quickly became a staple at Anfield. Notably, the earliest known recording of fans singing it at a match came during the 1965 FA Cup Final. Since then, it has grown on to be a core part of Liverpool’s identity. Popular rock band Pink Floyd, even sampled the Anfield crowd’s rendition for their 1971 song “Fearless.”
Besides Liverpool, several other clubs also followed suit, with Celtic fans famously singing it after a 1966 European Cup Winners’ Cup clash at Anfield. Even German giants Borussia Dortmund adopted it, with memorable joint renditions alongside Liverpool supporters. Feyenoord, FC Tokyo, as well as other clubs across Europe and beyond have also started singing it as a tradition.
You’ll Never Walk Alone (YNWA) significance
Following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, where 96 Liverpool fans passed away, the song gained greater significance. The song became a tribute and a rallying cry during the time of grief. A similar version was even released to honor the victims of the Bradford City fire in 1985. At present, Liverpool has the words “You’ll Never Walk Alone” inscribed on their crest.
You’ll Never Walk Alone (YNWA) lyrics
Given below are the lyrics to the club’s anthem:
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
