As the Premier League returns from its recently concluded January transfer window, check out the top 10 list of most expensive deadline day transfers in the Premier League January transfer window.

1. Enzo Fernandez – Benfica to Chelsea – 2023 – £107m

Apart from being the biggest January deadline day transfer, it is also currently a British record fee. Chelsea triggered Fernandez’s Benfica release clause and paid £107m to quickly finish the deal for Enzo just in time.

The deal broke the £100m Manchester City record spent on Jack Grealish just 18 months back.

2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Dortmund to Arsenal – 2018 – £55m

Arsenal signed Aubameyang for £55m from German club Dortmund who played for  4 years at the club. He eventually left following spats with Mikel Arteta. During his time with the gunners, he scored 92 goals in 163 appearances for Arsenal and won two FA cups.

3. Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea – 2011 – £50m

Chelsea signed Torres back in 2011 to broke the record for making the most expensive signing by a British club. However, aside from helping the Londoners win the Champions League in 2012, Torres failed to bring success at the club, and only managed to score 45 goals across 172 games.

4. Pedro Porro – Sporting to Tottenham – 2023 – £37m*

Spurs’ signing of Pedor Porro was one of the most drawn-out and complex transfers in this year’s January transfer window. Although the right-back initially joined on a loan deal going till the end of the season, Tottenham have the option to sign Porro permanently in the summer for a stunning £37m.

5. Andy Carroll – Newcastle to Liverpool – 2011 – £35m

Andy Carroll made headlines in 2011 following his £35m move to Liverpool, making him the most expensive British player ever. Liverpool signed him as a replacement for Torres on deadline day, however, he struggled for goals, and scored only 11 goals in 58 games. His career with and after the leaving the Reds was plagued with injury.

6. Willian – Shakhtar Donetsk to Anzhi – 2013 – £30m

Brazilian footballer, Willian made a very expensive move to Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013 before joining Chelsea the following summer after just 22 appearances. He is now currently playing for West Ham.

7. Andre Schurrle – Chelsea to Wolfsburg – 2015 – £27m

Andre Schurrle is the only player to have made the list for being sold abroad by a Premier League club. The German international scored just 14 goals in 65 games for the Blues, and Chelsea sold him off for £27m. Schurrle retired very early aged just 29 back in 2020, playing his last season at Fulham.

8. Juan Cuadrado – Fiorentina to Chelsea – 2015 – £26m

Another one of Chelsea’s signing is Juan Cuadrado, whom despite the hefty fee never got a chance to prove himself. The Colombian international made just 13 appearances for Chelsea before eventually getting sold off to Juventus for £25m.

9. Hamed Traore – Sassuolo to Bournemouth – 2023 – £26m*

Another recent move made this January, Bournemouth managed to make a big-money move on deadline day by securing Hamed Traore. Similar to Spurs and Porro, the Ivorian midfielder joined on an initial loan deal with a permanent option by the end of the season. Hamed’s transfer was also a club-record deal at £26m.

10. Lucas Moura – PSG to Spurs – 2018 – £24m

Lucas Moura made a big money move back in 2018 from PSG, but has however failed to impress fans. Despite making a few good appearances like his hat-trick in the 2019 Champions League final, his Tottenham career has been somewhat of a hit and miss. He has scored only 19 goals in 139 games is now more of a squad player under Antonio Conte.
