List of the most expensive players signings of Chelsea of all time

Here is the list of the most expensive signings of Premier League side Chelsea of all time

Chelsea’s huge spending in the transfer market over the past 20 years or more has contributed to some of their success. Indeed, the Blues have never been hesitant to spend big money on excellent players, especially since Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003.

A record-breaking period of success for the club, which included Premier League victories, two Champions League victories, and five FA Cup victories, was marked by many new additions, despite a few significant failures.

Despite some costly mistakes, Chelsea continues to spend money without fear.

Even though Abramovich is no longer Chelsea’s owner, the consortium led by Todd Boehly has already shown that it is willing to continue making large purchases.

According to reports, Mykhailo Mudryk has already verbally agreed to a seven-year contract with Chelsea and the two parties have reached a club-record agreement.

The Athletic claims that the west London club met with its counterparts from Shakhtar and reached an agreement on a €110 million contract.

Take a look at the top expensive players signed by Chelsea in their history.

1- Romelu Lukaku (£101.7m)

Lukaku, who was first signed back in 2011, was in outstanding form for Inter in Serie A. In the summer of 2021, Chelsea secured the club-record signing of the Belgian after sorely needing a striker to spearhead their attack.

Lukaku worked his way back into the team when Tuchel left him out, but he was never really able to enlist. In the end, Chelsea granted the Belgian’s demand, allowing him to return to Inter on loan for the 2022–2023 season.

2- Wesley Fofana (£72.4m)

When Chelsea pulled up the chequebook and offered over £70 million for the outstanding center-back, Leicester finally agreed to part with their prized defender.

Fofana is only in his early 20s, therefore Chelsea will feel like they have one of their center-back spots covered for the next few years.

3- Kai Havertz (£72m)

When Chelsea paid £72 million to Kai Havertz away from Bayer Leverkusen, he became the club’s most expensive signings at the time.

4-Kepa Arrizabalaga (£72m)

Kepa Arrizabalaga became the most expensive goalkeeper in history after Thibaut Courtois left Chelsea for Real Madrid in 2018.

Before moving to London, Kepa had established quite a reputation for himself in Bilbao and was even connected with Madrid.

5- Alvaro Morata (£59.4m)

With substantial funding and a stellar reputation, the Spaniard came from the Spanish giants side Real Madrid. He, however, found it difficult to adjust to the demands of the Premier League.

6- Marc Cucurella (£58.8m)

Cucurella, a product of La Masia, appeared to be on his way to Manchester City, but the Premier League champions were unable to reach an agreement on a price with Brighton for a player who had succeeded in his first season at the Amex, in 2021–2022.

7- Christian Pulisic (£57.6m)

When Chelsea signed him in January 2019, Pulisic was one of the top young talents in Europe.

But throughout the course of his three seasons in the Premier League, the American has differed wildly.

8- Fernando Torres (£52.7m)

One of the greatest moves in Premier League history was Torres’ shocking switch to Chelsea in January 2011. Amid a phenomenal run at Liverpool, the Spaniard had turned into one of the most feared strikers in the world.

9- Jorginho (£51.3m)

Jorginho ultimately joined his former Napoli manager, Maurizio Sarri, in West London despite Pep Guardiola’s desire for him to join Man City.

10- Raheem Sterling (£50.6m)

The former Manchester City winger is anticipated to provide the Bridge’s attacking unit, which had some scoring difficulties last season, with more of a cutting edge.

Sterling’s talent is undeniable, even though he saw a slight drop in popularity in the latter year of his signing at the Etihad.

11- Timo Werner (£47.7m)

Timo Werner was signed for a high price after having a successful season with RB Leipzig. However, the German international’s move to Chelsea has not gone well, and he is now expected to rejoin his old team.

12- Ben Chilwell (£45.2m)

It was predictable that Chelsea would spend heavily on the Leicester City youth product in the summer of 2020 because he had proven himself to be one of the top left-backs in England.

With 42 appearances in all competitions, he enjoyed a fantastic debut season at Chelsea. He participated in the whole ninety minutes of Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League victory over Manchester City.

13- Mateo Kovacic (£40.5m)

These days, the Croatian is a necessary part of Chelsea’s midfield. In 2018, he moved to Chelsea from Real Madrid originally on a season-long loan.

In 2019, the Blues’ new manager Frank Lampard decided to give him a long-term contract. Kovacic was an important player in the Chelsea team that won the 2021 Champions League.

14- Andriy Shevchenko (£39.5m)

When Abramovich was able to sign the striker in 2006, he believed he had accomplished a big coup because the Ukrainian had made himself into perhaps the best forward in the world during his prolific time at AC Milan.

Shevchenko, however, never achieved the same success at Stamford Bridge, tallying just 22 goals in 77 appearances. In the end, he returned to Milan on loan in 2008 before joining Dynamo Kyiv.

15- Hakim Ziyech (£36m)

Following a great stint at Ajax, the gifted Moroccan player relocated to West London in the summer of 2020. Under Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s attack was supposed to benefit from the attacking midfielder’s technique and flair.

Ziyech hasn’t exactly been able to secure a place in the starting lineup, though, even under the current manager Thomas Tuchel. His future with the Blues is still in doubt as of now.
