New-season of the Premier League kicks off in August as we have a look at the most expensive transfers of all time. Many clubs have spent a lot of money to acquire the services of world-class players and only a few have been able to justify that price tag.
Five Most expensive transfers and signings in the Premier League
Paul Pogba (€105 million)
In 2016, Paul Pogba joined his former club Manchester United from Juventus for a world-record transfer fee of €105 million (£89.3 million) plus bonuses of €5 million, making him the most expensive player in the Premier League.
At that point in time, it was the highest transfer fee that any English club has ever paid for a player. Since joining Manchester United 5 years ago, he has been injury-prone at times and made only 199 appearances for the club scoring 38 goals.
Being in and out of the team has affected his form and his questionable fitness has often led him to be dropped out of the squad. His contract expires next summer and he has still not agreed to a new contract as speculation of joining Real Madrid increase.
Manchester United are working on an extension but the French International is not convinced by the project and is looking to play his football elsewhere after his contract expires in the next season. United will hope to cash in on Pogba before his contract expires.
Harry Maguire (£ 87 million)
28-year-old English defender Harry Maguire became one of the most expensive defenders of all time after Manchester United paid £ 87 million to Leicester City in 2019 surpassing the transfer fee Liverpool paid to acquire the services of Van Dijk.
A lot of money was paid to Leicester City which they used extremely well to rebuild their squad. United once again spent big bucks on a player who has still not helped them to win anything. Big money move proved to be a failure in this transfer just like Pogba.
Jadon Sancho (£ 85 million)
Manchester United have once again spend big money on bringing the 21-year-old English forward Jadon Sancho to their team. United and Dortmund had reached an agreement in principle for Sancho’s transfer, subject to him signing a contract and passing a medical, after the conclusion of EURO 2020.
It will be interesting to see how this signing will pay off for Manchester United who are spending a lot of cash on bringing top players into their team but are still struggling to win trophies even with big names on their teamsheet.
Romelu Lukaku (£ 84.70 million)
In July 2017, Lukaku joined Manchester United for an undisclosed fee which was later revealed to be around £ 84.70 million. This signing also proved to be a failure as Lukaku had problems with the management and was upset by the treatment from the club.
In his two-year spell with Manchester United, he scored 42 goals in 96 appearances in all competitions for the club which earned him a move to Inter Milan after his fallout with the management of Manchester United.
Virgil Van Dijk (£ 84.65 million)
The 29-year-old Dutch defender has established himself as one of the best defenders of all-time guiding Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League glory. He secured a move to Liverpool in the winter transfer window of 2017 for a fee of £ 84.65 million which was a world-record fee for a defender.
He justified his price tag better than any other player on this list as he became a very important figure in the dressing room and also a strong leader in the defense. He has been the most influential player in the Liverpool team and has always been solid as a rock
