Siraj joins the list of the bowlers who have taken 4 wickets in an ODI

When he grabbed four wickets in five deliveries against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup final at the R. Premadasa Stadium in this city on Sunday, India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj shattered numerous records.

Siraj is the first Indian bowler to claim four wickets in one over in men’s ODIs.

Siraj showed out with his swing and effective use of the crease to destroy Sri Lanka in a game where spin was thought to have called the strokes more. Pathum Nissanka could only drive to backward point on the opening ball of Siraj’s second over, who swung to his right to complete the catch. After a dot ball, Siraj successfully trapped Sadeera Samawickrama’s leg before with a quick nip-backer that clipped the batter’s front stumps and beat the inside edge.

Charith Asalanka chipped the first ball he faced straight to cover point on the very next ball. Dhananjaya de Silva punched Siraj past mid-on for four to avoid being hit by the hat-trick ball. De Silva pushed at an outswinger, offering a slight edge behind to grab a catch, but Siraj had the last laugh. When Siraj got late movement off a bigger delivery to swing past Dasun Shanaka’s outside edge and send the off-stump on a cartwheel ride, he further damaged Sri Lanka by claiming his five-wicket haul.

Who else has secured 4 wickets in an over?

Siraj became the first player from India to take four wickets in an over of men’s ODI since 2002, matching the records of Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka (against Bangladesh in 2003), Mohammad Sami of Pakistan (against New Zealand in 2003), and Adil Rashid of England (against West Indies in 2019).

Along with Vaas and USA’s Ali Khan, Siraj reached the milestone in the joint-fastest time, needing only 16 balls to take his five wickets. Additionally, Siraj has the most wickets for India in the first 10 overs of an ODI since 2002.

Siraj took 1002 balls during his 29th ODI to secure his 50th wicket in the format, which ranks him joint-fourth fastest among all Indian bowlers and is the second-fastest bowler in ODI history (after Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis’ 847 balls).

In order to surpass Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed, who picked 5/19 against India in Sharjah in 1995, Siraj took his sixth wicket by getting one to sneak back in from outside off and castle Kusal Mendis through the gate. This gave Siraj the record for the best bowling stats by a speed bowler in the Asia Cup.
