According to reports, the cloack that Lionel Messi donned to win the World Cup cost £1,650. Argentina defeated France on penalties on Sunday to win an all-time classic after a thrilling 3-3 draw in Qatar.
Messi, the captain, was tasked with raising the trophy on behalf of his country in his fifth and last World Cup. But just before he did, the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, draped a traditional Arab men’s cloak called a bisht over his shoulders. Then Messi joined the rest of his teammates in celebrating while holding the renowned gold trophy.
Now it’s known that the two robes, which each valued at £1,650, were manufactured especially for the captains of both teams who are Messi for Argentina and Hugo Lloris for France.
Who made the Bisht?
Muhammad Abdullah Al-Salem, a tailor based in Qatar, made the outfits. “When we were asked to construct this bisht, we initially had no idea that it was for the World Cup champion,” he admitted to Esquire Middle East Arabic. “We were startled to find that Messi’s bisht came from our store, and I was happy to learn that the authorities had selected us as the source of this bisht.”
He continued, outlining just what the design had to be, “The required parameters were that the bisht be light, which we realised afterwards and seemed natural to us.”
For his outstanding World Cup achievements, which included seven goals and three assists, Messi was awarded the Golden Ball. However, Kylian Mbappe’s hat trick allowed him to score eight goals in Qatar, preventing him from winning the Golden Boot.
This is Argentina’s first victory since Diego Maradona led them to victory in 1986. And on Tuesday, thousands of their supporters rejoiced as they flocked to Buenos Aires’s city centre for the open-top bus parade.
