A Brazilian-Monegasque billionaire and socialite Lily Safra died on Saturday, July 9th, 2022 at the age of 87 in Geneva, Switzerland, know her net worth and husbands

Lily also owned the significant art collection and a historic Villa Leopolda. The cause of the billionaire’s death hasn’t been yet revealed by her family members but it looks to be due to age related, health issues.

According to a report by Forbes Magazine, Lily attained a fortune of more than R$ 5 Billion (brazilian currency) that is approximately US $1.3 billion through her 4 marriages.

Lily Safra Early Life

Lily Safra was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil on December 30th, 1934. She came from a humble background. Her father was an engineer in Czech railways but he had to move to Brazil for the electrification of Brazil’ railway.

Lily grew up in Rio de Janeiro before moving to Uruguay with her family. Throughout her life Lily was married 4 times. She met her first husband ‘Mario Cohen’ at the age of 17. Cohen was an Argentine hosiery magnate. With him Lily had 3 children in the early 1960s.

Later in 1965, Lily married to a businessman Alfredo Monteverde, but the 45-years-old businessman committed suicide in August 25, 1969. He left all assets to his wife, Lily.

Later, in 1976, She married a banker, Edmond Safra, whom he first dated for a while but their relationship ended because Safra’ family didn’t approve of their relationship. Edmond Safra was founder of the Republic National Bank of New York City.

However, Edmond died in a horrific fire accident on December 3, 1999 at the age of 67. But the fire accident was ruled to be murder. Ted Maher, a former Green Beret was arrested for the suspicion of lighting the fire and was sentenced for 8 years.

Lily managed to save herself from the horrific accident, she inherited $800 million from this marriage.

After Edmond’ death, Lily married another businessman Samuel Bendahan. Although she ended up divorcing Samuel after a year.

Her Charitable Work

Lily was famous for her generosity and donations. Along with her late husband Edmond Safra and Nina Weiner, she founded a foundation named as “International Sephardic Education Foundation” in 1977.

Lily was also the chairperson of the foundation which works for humanitarian relief and medical research. For her kind work towards the society and for her long-term association with the foundation, Lily was awarded ‘An Enduring Vision’s award by Elton John AIDS Foundation in 2009.

In May 2012, Lily auctioned 70 pieces of her jewellery collection to Geneva’ Christie. The money raised through this auction was donated to 32 different charitable institutions globally.

In the same year, Lily donated $16 million to Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital in Tel Hashomer. In the year 2019, she pledged €10 million for the restoration of Notre Dame de Paris which was damaged in a horrific fire..
