Former Premier Li Keqiang, a longtime member of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) top policy-making body, the Standing Committee of the Politburo, decided recently.
The news of his death was announced by Chinese state media on October 27. The announcement stated that Li’s 68 years of life had ended suddenly on October 26 due to a severe heart attack.

Li Keqiang was credited with being a crucial player in China’s sudden rise as an economic power. However, his political career took a dramatic turn in October 2022 when he was removed from the Politburo during the Communist Party National Congress. Later that year, in March, Li Qiang succeeded him as Premier, capping a series of events that contributed to a gradual deterioration in his political standing.
Due to all this, the news of his sudden death has caused massive grief among his family, friends, and countrymen. As a result, he has become a trending topic of discussion, and many people are currently trying to learn more about him. So, here’s what we know about him:
Who was Li Keqiang?
Li Keqiang was a former Chinese premier and a renowned economist. He has been in the news because he passed away recently at the age of 68.
He was born on 1 July 1955 in Hefei, Anhui, China. His mother’s identity is unknown, but his father worked as a municipal official in Anhui.
Li Keqiang did his schooling at Hefei No. 8 Senior High School. He thereafter enrolled at Peking University Law School, where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Laws. In 1988, he went back to Peking University for post-graduate studies after working for around six years. He then graduated from Peking University in 1995 with a Master of Economics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics.
He was married, and his wife’s name is Cheng Hong. She teaches English language and literature at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, with a focus on American naturalism. The couple also has one daughter. She received her undergraduate degree from Peking University and later studied in the United States but her name isn’t known.
He died in Shanghai on 27 October 2023.
His career
Li Keqiang started his career in the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC), where he was the organization’s first secretary from 1993 to 1998. After that, he served as governor and party secretary of Henan from 1998 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007, he served as party secretary of Liaoning, the province’s highest political position.
His most notable role was holding the top deputy premier post under Premier Wen Jiabao from 2008 to 2013. Li took on the role of Premier in 2013, steering a shift from export-oriented growth to a focus on internal consumption.
Li Keqiang oversaw important sectors like international relations, national security, economic and financial affairs, and reforms throughout his time in office. He played a key role in the 2015 introduction of the Made in China 2025 strategy plan.
However, he resigned from the Politburo Standing Committee in October 2022, and he gave Li Qiang the position of Premier in March 2023.
