Leon Edwards is a renowned English mixed martial artist. He has been in the news because he is going to face the Nigerian Nightmare, the famed Kamaru Usman, in the last match of their rivalry trilogy.

His full name is Leon Aaron Edwards. He was born on August 25, 1991, in Kingston, Jamaica. He is fondly called Rocky by his fans. His father was involved in crimes before dying, whereas his mother’s whereabouts are mostly unknown. He also has one brother named Fabian, a mixed martial artist.

At the age of 9, Leon Edwards was shifted to Aston, Birmingham, England. He is currently a resident of Erdington, Birmingham, England. He holds British nationality.


His height is 6 feet 0 inches or 183 cm, and his weight is 170 lbs or 77 kg. He is currently 31 years old.

His career

When Leon Edwards was 17 years old, his mother convinced him to join an MMA club after he had been involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking, street fighting, and knife possession. In 2010, he made his amateur debut at Bushido Challenge 2: A New Dawn before starting his professional fighting career.

Eventually, he committed to a deal with Fight UK MMA. He left it and began competing for “BAMMA,” where he defeated Wayne Murrie to win the welterweight title, which he then successfully defended once against Shaun Taylor in his final match with BAMMA before joining the UFC.


On November 8, 2014, Leon Edwards made his UFC debut against Claudio Silva but lost by a split decision. He bounced back by defeating Seth Baczynski via KO.  Afterward, he defeated Peter Sobotta, Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Albert Tumenov, Pawel Pawlak, Dominic Waters, and Albert Waters in bouts.

In 2015, he competed against Kamaru Usman, a potential UFC champion, but lost by a unanimous decision. In the main event of UFC on ESPN 4 in 2019, he defeated Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision.

Leon Edwards eventually defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 263 in June 2021 by unanimous decision when COVID-19 limitations were repealed. On August 20, 2022, at UFC 278 for the UFC Welterweight Championship, Leon Edwards fought Kamaru Usman again and won by knockout in the fifth round to retain his championship and win Performance of the Night honors.

On March 18, 2023, UFC 286 will host the third Edwards v. Usman fight.
