Dawson’s family announced his death Wednesday at the age of 87 buto cause was given, though Dawson had had prostate cancer and quadruple heart bypass surgery over the years and he had been in hospice care since Aug. 12.

Len Dawson was an excellent father, husband, brother, and friend. Len was constantly appreciative of the numerous connections he made throughout his football and broadcasting professions and was frequently overcome by them.

“With wife Linda by his side, it is with regret that we inform you of the passing of our dear Len Dawson,” his family said in a statement to KMBC announcing his passing.

His cause of death was not made public, although according to The Independent, his health had been gradually deteriorating for years.

He spent 14 seasons with the Chiefs of the American Football League (then known as the Dallas Texans) after leaving the NFL in 1962.

By scoring 30 touchdowns in 14 games in 1964, he broke the Chief’s single-season record for most passing touchdowns, which he held until 2018. Len subsequently lost the record to Patrick Mahomes, who did it in just 10 games, but Len still holds the career passing record.

The football player declared his retirement from professional football following the 1975 campaign, and he later started working as the sports director at KMBC-TV in Kansas City. Len, often known as “Lenny the Cool,” worked as a colour analyst for the Chiefs Radio Network when he retired.

He guided the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl triumph in 1969 after guiding them to three AFL Championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969.

In 1967, he guided the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl final, but they fell to the Green Bay Packers 35–10 in that game.

Following the passing of the NFL star, the Kansas City Chiefs have issued a statement. Len Dawson, a quarterback who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was a Kansas City icon, passed away, the Kansas City Chiefs said.

Clark Hunt, the Chiefs’ chairman, and CEO, expressed his “heartbreak” and noted that “Len Dawson is associated with the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Len Dawson “had a bigger impact on shaping the organisation as we know it now than any player you would be hard-pressed to find.”

The CEO continued, calling Len “amazing” and expressing his “admiration” for him during both his playing and broadcasting careers.

“Len made it a point to support the neighbourhood he cherished. A true legend for the series has been gone. Linda and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.”
