League of Legends Worlds 2023 format
This year, LOL Esports released a new and updated format with inspiration from Counter Strike Global Offensive majors. The new changes will allow LEC and LCS teams to have a fighting chance against the LCK and LPL teams.
The League of Legends Worlds 2023 will follow a format featuring three sections: Play-ins, Swiss and Knockout stages. However, before the Play-ins, the Worlds Qualifying Series (WQS) will take place. Here, the fourth-placed teams from LEC and LCS will compete in a best-of-five match to qualify for World 2023.
Following the WQS, the Play-ins stage will begin which will include 22 teams from the following:
- The top 2 teams from VCS and PCS
- The best teams from LLA, CBLOL, LJL, and the winner of WQS
Besides the teams stated above, the teams with a direct entry into the Swiss stage are as follows:
- 4 seeds from LPL and LCK
- 3 seeds from LEC and LCS
In the Play-Ins, there will be four-team double-elimination brackets, where only two teams will move on to the Swiss stage. Each group will play a best-of-three double-elimination bracket. From there, the upper winner from one group will face the lower winner from another group in a best-of-five match. This will decide the Swiss stage qualifications.
The Swiss Stage, which is a new addition to the tournament, will feature teams battling in a five-round format. In this stage, orgs with similar records will face off against other. After five rounds of battling, the eight teams with the best records will reach the knockout stages.
The final stage of the League of Legends World 2023 will be a standard knockout stage. Here, the top eight teams from the Swiss stage will play in best-of-five games in the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final.
