His representative confirmed in a statement that he passed away on Sunday at his Malibu home in the company of his wife, Barbara Guggenheim.

Bert Was A Talented Writer As Well

Fields was born in Los Angeles on March 31, 1929, and was also a prolific writer. During the Korean War, he served in the American Air Force. After that, he began to practice law and lecture at Stanford Law School. Barbara Guggenheim, Bert’s wife, James Elder, James Elder’s son, Michael Lane, Annabelle, and James Elder’s grandchild survive him.

In addition to practicing law, Fields was a talented author who penned volumes on King Richard III and his portrayal as the evil king of England. Additionally, he completed “The Family Book” after Puzo’s passing.

The attorney was involved in the contentious trial of private investigator Anthony Pellicano in 2008; Pellicano received a 15-year jail term for illegal wiretaps and operating a criminal organization. Federal agents questioned Fields at the time, but he vehemently denied any knowledge of wrongdoing.

Bert Handled Some Significant Lawsuits In The Entertainment Industry 

Throughout his career, Bert, a partner at Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger, litigated a number of well-known cases involving the entertainment business. The Weinstein brothers, Tom Cruise, George Lucas, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, James Cameron, Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Silver, and Madonna were among the clients he represented.

The managing partner of Greenberg Glusker, Bob Baradaran, paid tribute to the lawyer in a statement. “For forty years, we were graced with Bert’s brilliance, decency, and charm. Bert was a beloved colleague, friend, and mentor who trained a generation of outstanding lawyers.”

Fileds was renowned for maintaining his composure in court. After defending media billionaire Jeffrey Katzenberg in his $250 million lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company, he gained notoriety in the legal community. Jeffrey demanded a cut of the revenue from his blockbusters The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. 

Among his other well-known cases was George Lucas’ agreement with Disney for the rights to the Walt Disney theme parks, Michael Jackson’s historic pact with Sony Music, the Buchwald v. Paramount Coming to America case, and the Beatles and Apple Corps’ lawsuit over the Beatlemania musical. His net worth stood at $8 million.

Clients Recall the Attorney

Tom Cruise, a longtime client and Hollywood icon recalled the late attorney after learning of his passing and remarked, “Bert Fields was a gentleman; an exceptional human being.” He possessed a strong intellect, a quick wit, and charisma that made being with him enjoyable. I still adore him and always will. It was an honor to call him a friend.”
