On Sunday, the USA sports and gymnastics doctor was attacked at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida. He was stabbed multiple times by an inmate during an altercation.
Who is Larry Nassar?
Larry Nassar was working as a sports and gymnastics doctor at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trained Olympians.
He was sentenced to decades in prison for assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists. Nassar admitted to s*xually assaulting athletes and separately pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.
Many athletes testified in 2018 during victim impact statements that, over Nassar’s two decades of abuse, they had informed adults, including coaches and athletic trainers, about what was happening, but that nothing was done.
The FBI failed to stop Nassar after becoming aware of allegations against him in 2015. This led more than 100 women, including Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, to file a lawsuit seeking more than $1 billion from the federal government.
In 2016, more than a year later, he was taken into custody by Michigan State University police.
More than 300 women and kids who were assaulted by Nassar received $500 million from Michigan State, which was accused of squandering opportunities to stop him over a long period of time.
A $380 million settlement was reached between USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
Nassar’s final appeal was rejected by the Michigan Supreme Court in June 2022.
Four years ago, the court held an extraordinary seven-day hearing during which more than 150 victims spoke and submitted statements.
