Know the contract extension details of Kyler Murray, its details, amount and update

This 2022 NFL offseason has been a crazy one so far, from all of the wild trades and signings to Tom Brady retiring and un-retiring and even more. While looking ahead to NFL Week 8 odds, a bit of news may have come your way, and it is a contract that has been in discussion all offseason, Kyler Murray’s contract extension.

As of July 21, 24-year-old Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray signed an extension with the team worth $230.5 million for five more seasons. The deal, which runs through the 2028 season, includes $160 million in guaranteed money as well.

Where Does This Sit Amongst Other QBs?

The average value per year on Murray’s deal is $46.1 million, which is the second highest in the NFL behind only Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who sits at $50.3 million per year.

Behind him is Deshaun Watson’s deal with the Cleveland Browns with an average annual value of $46 million and Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes’ deal of $45 million per year. As Murray is just 24 years old, it will be interesting to see what sort of contracts upcoming quarterbacks will receive.

This signing, like all new benchmarks, means that other quarterbacks will get big bucks. As already stated, guys like Rodgers, Watson, and Mahomes will be making $45 million or more this year, but they aren’t the only guys making over $40 million this year.

Josh Allen ($43 million), Derek Carr ($40.47 million), Dak Prescott ($40 million), and Matt Stafford ($40 million) all will be hitting that mark as well, with Carr, Stafford, and Rodgers, the only players over 30 years old.

Out of all these $40 million or more players, there are only three who have won and even played in a Super Bowl (Mahomes, Rodgers, Stafford) while the rest search for their firsts.

What Does this Mean for Lamar Jackson?

While other quarterbacks have already signed big contracts, some still look for their big payday following their rookie contract. Three names stand out of the bunch: Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert.

Burrow and Herbert will likely look for contracts in 2023 or 2024 at the latest with potentially bigger money than Kyler Murray. Lamar Jackson is who all eyes are set on now, who potentially waited to see what Murray’s payday would be before continuing extension talks with the Baltimore Ravens.

Jackson was drafted in the same 2018 draft as Kyler Murray, with Murray having already earned $30 million in three years before his $230.5 million deal. In contrast, Lamar Jackson signed a four-year, $9.5 million contract as a rookie.

The difference can be attributed to Murray being first overall while Jackson was 32nd. Murray won the rookie of the year award in that rookie season, but in the following season, Jackson had the last laugh winning league MVP.

On top of being QBs in the same draft, these two are comparable in age but also play style as both are known to be dynamic, mobile quarterbacks. For Jackson, it is fair to compare his upcoming contract discussions to the likes of Murray, as he has voiced his commitment to stay with the Ravens.

What Does This Mean for the Rest of the League?

Outside of the quarterback position, new benchmarks have been reached in other positions over the years.

In 2020, Christian McCaffery signed a $16 million a year deal to make him the highest-paid running back in history.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill is making $30 million a year, followed by Davante Adams at $28 million and DeAndre Hopkins at $27.25 million (this makes Murray and Hopkins the highest-paid duo).

On defense and the most recent big contract, Aaron Donald is the highest paid non-QB at $31.5 million a year.

With Kyler Murray becoming the eighth quarterback to reach the $40 million or more per year mark, it shows that teams are not afraid to pay their players, especially those who show loyalty to staying. All of the names listed in this are all names that were signed as extensions rather than free agency.
