Including the death of a fish, a crab, a rooster, a buffalo, and a lamb. A massive bonfire is also built. At this massive celebration, somewhere between 250 and 300 idols from Kullu’s neighbouring villages are worshipped. Through a large procession, the idol of Ragunath Ji is returned to its rightful location.

Kullu Dussehra History: Legends Of The Demi-Gods
First Legend: Kullu Dussehra
Each myth, story, and anecdote associated with this historical celebration brilliantly captures the festival’s symbolic significance. The big celebration of Kullu Dussehra has two contrasting legends associated with it. The first one proceeds as follows. When returning from Kailash, Maharishi Jamdagni carried a basket containing figurines of eighteen different deities.
The Kullu valley was completely covered with images when he crossed the Chanderkhani pass. And the residents of these hills saw these images transform into godlike beings. Thus, the “Valley of Gods” became the name for this stunning location. And for this reason, the live people perform elaborate rituals to worship these strewn pictures.
Second Legend: Kullu Dussehra
Another tradition originated in the sixteenth century. Raja Jagat Singh, Kullu’s then-regent, is credited with creating Kullu Dussehra, which has its roots in his reign. He had heard about a peasant who had learned valuable lessons. He then gave the farmer the ultimatum: give him those pearls or die. The peasant, who was aware of the raja’s depravity and avarice. Committed himself by jumping into the flames before cursing the raja. Raja Jagat Singh was filled with shame and self-disgust as he discovered worms in the water instead of rice and blood.
An anxious man Raja grew sicker over time. Hakims, vaids, religious leaders, or courtiers were unable to identify his illness. He was still troubled by the Brahmin’s ghost. Raja Jagat Singh eventually sought assistance, and a revered brahmin, Krishan Datt, then advised him that Lord Rama’s blessings may heal him. He was asked whether the peasant’s curse would be lifted if he transported the idol of Lord Raghunath from Ayodhya to Kullu.
This eventually occurred after many difficulties, and Lord Raghunath was elevated to the position of ruling deity in the Kullu valley. It’s interesting to note that the deity’s weight changed when it was transported from Kullu. Back to Ayodhya by the locals vs vice versa. The Dussehra festival’s main attraction, this idol is carried throughout the hill town on a Ratha.
