On Sunday, Koki Watanabe pulled off an impressive victory over Chou Tien-Chen in the men’s singles final of the Swiss Open.
Watanabe is ranked No. 37 in the world and fought hard to win the title in his first BWF Tour Super 300 final after defeating Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the semis.

He took an early lead in the final, but Chou fought back to win the second game and level the match. Undeterred, Watanabe reset in the deciding third game and surged ahead to take the lead once again.

Who is Koki Watanabe?
Koki Watanabe is a well-known Japanese badminton player. He has been in the news because he recently won the title in men’s singles at the Swiss Open.
He was born on January 29, 1999, in Koshigaya, Saitama, Japan. He did his schooling at Saitama Sakae High School and Saitama Sakaechugakko Koto School and entered the badminton club under the influence of his sister. Nothing is known about his family or siblings though.
His height is 1.66 meters or 5 feet 5 inches, and his weight is 62 kg or 137 lbs. He is currently 24 years old. He is currently ranked 37th in the world with 30857 ranking points in men’s singles.
His career
Koki Watanabe started playing badminton at the young age of four after being influenced by his sister, who was also into the sport. He devoted himself to badminton in kindergarten and went on to win the Saitama school championships for three consecutive years during his elementary school days.
Later, he entered Saitamasakaechugakko Koto School, where he won the singles title at the national junior championships and finished third in the doubles event.
In 2015 and 2016, Koki Watanabe represented the national junior team at the Asia and World Junior Championships. He won the World boys’ singles bronze medal in 2015 and was also part of the team that won the 2015, 2016 Asian, and 2016 World Junior bronze medals.
In 2018, he became the runner-up at the BWF Super 100 tournament at the Russian Open.
