Who Was Kodiyeri Balakrishnan?

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was a well-known Indian politician, associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He has been in the news because he passed away recently.

On November 16, 1953, he was born in Kodiyeri, Thalassery. His parents are Narayani Amma and Kunjunni Kurup.

He attended Oniyan High School and Kodiyeri Junior Basic School. Later, he studied at University College in Thiruvananthapuram and the Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College in Mahé.

He married to S. R. Vinodini, the ex-MLA M. V. Rajagopalan Master’s daughter, in 1980. They have two kids together, named Binoy and Bineesh Kodiyeri.

He passed away on October 1st, 2022. At the time of his death, he was just 68 years old.

His Career

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan started his political career when he was in college. In 1970, he entered politics by joining the student wing of CPI (Marxist). Between 1973 to 1979, he served as both the All India Joint Secretary and Secretary of the Students’ Federation of India’s (SFI) Kerala State Committee.

He served as the Kannur District President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) from 1980 to 1982. He served as the deputy leader of the CPI (M) Parliamentary Party and was a member of the Politburo.

He was chosen from Thalassery to serve as an MLA in the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1982, 1987, 2001, 2006, and 2011. He served as Kerala’s Minister of Home Affairs during V S Achudanandan’s government.

He was chosen to serve a three-year term as Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala State Committee on February 23, 2015. In 2018 he was re-elected for a second term as State Secretary, and in March 2022 he was re-elected for a third term.

He resigned from the position on August 28, 2022, citing deteriorating health, and M V Govindan took his place.

Death Cause Of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan

In light of his deteriorating health, he was hospitalized at Apollo Hospital in Chennai after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis on August 28, 2022.
