That is certainly the case with Spartans, whose origins are based on Halo mythos. Dr Catherine Halsey, an unethical scientist in the Halo TV series, kidnapped future Spartans from all around the galaxy when they were youngsters and subjected them to a gruelling training regimen till they reached adolescence.

She then subjected them to gruesome genetic engineering & cybernetic experiments, effectively turning them into supersoldiers.

Many died, while others were paralysed or wounded, yet a select few emerged transformed. The Master Chief, John-117, is the most well-known Spartan to go through this.

Soren-066, the only Spartan that escaped the programme after augmentation, was debuted in Halo episode 2. Soren’s technique had failed, prompting UNSC scientists to implant more cybernetic technology under one of his arms.

This appears to have made him feel like an “outsider” even among his own Spartans, and he began to doubt the enterprise as a whole, eventually deciding to flee.

Soren’s choice to depart put John-117 in a tough situation. As he had to choose between his allegiance to a UNSC and his feelings for Soren, whom he considered a member of his family.

He eventually let Soren go, and he’s on his way to a Rubble, a haven from the UNSC. He tells the Master Chief in which he’s heading, possibly implying that the Spartans were sent there on a black operations mission, as in the novels.
