The sport of boxing has certainly enjoyed a tough few years. However, with matches back, know the best boxers in the world 2022
The coronavirus pandemic meant that a lot of fights were backlogged and then forced behind closed doors for the best part of 18 months. As enjoyable as some of the fight camps were in Eddie Hearn’s back garden over the summer of 2020, and the rumble on the rock was certainly unique, they paled in comparison to the thrill of a full capacity arena. And just when you thought some normality was on the horizon, the conflict in Russia has escalated and changed the landscape of the heavyweight division once again.
Know Who Are The Best Pound For Pound Boxers In The World Right Now 2022
As damaged as the sport has been recently, there are still plenty of future bouts to look forward to and some dream matches that are yet to come to fruition. We’re not even halfway through the year yet but there have been plenty of boxers staking their claim as pound for pound best in the world. Let’s take a look at a few, and see how they compare based on records and recent form.
Tyson Fury
What can we say that hasn’t already been said about Tyson Fury? Having completed perhaps the best comeback arc in boxing history, ‘The Gypsy King’ recently beat Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout and while the American might want revenge, the hard work of Dillian Whyte has made him Fury’s next opponent. Those familiar with boxing betting will know how formidable Fury is, and given his unbeaten career record, he is heavily favoured to beat Whyte in their bout next month. Expect an intense fight, but don’t be surprised if you see Fury’s hand raised at the end of it.
Canelo Álvarez
Although we said the last two years have been tough for boxing, for Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez it has been 24 months of hard work, and plenty of fights. Indeed, the Mexican has stepped in the ring five times since December 2020, winning every bout. Only a loss to Floyd Mayweather back in 2013 — arguably Mayweather’s prime and when Canelo was far less experienced — serves as a blemish on his record. With talks of a trilogy fight against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin emerging once more, but first he’ll have a chance to prove he is the best pound for pound fighters around against Dmitry Bivol. Canelo’s versatility means he’s fought at both middleweight and lightweight, with the bout against Golovkin one he is clearly interested in.
“Yeah, it’s personal. He talks a lot,” insists Alvarez. “He (Golovkin) says a lot of things. We’ll see.
“First things first. We still have to win May 7. I am one (hundred) percent focused on May 7. After that, we will talk about that fight.”
Oleksandr Usyk
The conflict in Ukraine has meant native heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk has cancelled all future plans for the time being to help fight the war in his homeland. Perhaps the only boxer close to touching Fury anytime soon, it’s difficult to see a way in which the two ever get to square off in their primes. While the politics of boxing meant Fury wouldn’t have been able to face Anthony Joshua until he beat Usyk, the 35-year-old threw a spanner in the works last September when he dominated the Brit and won by a unanimous decision. A mandatory rematch clause means the two will square off at some point, but it almost looks a foregone conclusion already, with Usyk the clear favourite in the boxing predictions.
