What Is The Cost Of The Cristiano Ronaldo Statue In Goa, India And Its Location
The tribute in Calangute, 5,700 miles away from Portugal costed 12,000 pounds or Rs.12 lakhs and weighs 65 stone.
“All the boys and girls who want to make football a career will get inspired by people like Cristiano Ronaldo. If you pursue your dream and you’re passionate about it then you can reach a higher goal. This is what we have written on the plaque,” Michael Lobo, a minister in Goa said while showing the statue to the global stage.
However, the statue has sparked controversy with some locals questioning the need to honour a Portuguese player with Portugal having ruled over the land. Goa was granted freedom from Portugal only in 1961 and some have gone onto say that the statue insults the traditions and freedom struggle of the locals.
‘There are so many great footballers from Calangute like Bruno Coutinho and Yolanda D’Souza, who have brought laurels to India by playing football at international level. Why couldn’t their statues be installed? They are from Calangute,” Calangute constituency forum president Premanand Divkar said.
The statue meanwhile is a much better replica of the player than the bust which had come up in his home town.
