On December 23, 2020, Wirtz extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2023. On January 19, 2021, his goal in the 80th minute led to a 2-1 home win for Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund. Wirtz became the first player to score 5 goals before 18 years of age in Bundesliga history when he score against VfB Stuttgart on February 6, 2021, as Leverkusen won 5-2.
