Russian Tennis star Daniil Medvedev blindsided Sumit Nagal in the second round of the Tokyo Olympics to end the Indian Tennis star’s fairytale run. Sumit Nagal apparently stepped in as the underdog even as he beat Denis Istomin in straight sets in the opening round. Medvedev, the world number two and the second seed, will face Fabio Fognini next.

Daniil Medvedev was born in Moscow on the 11th of February in 1996 to Sergey and Olga. His father started as a computer engineer and has gradually set up his own civil engineering business. Medvedev mother is likely a homemaker and he has two sisters, 12 and 8 his senior.
The 25-year old studied physics and mathematics at a specialized school before graduating to study economics and commerce in Moscow State Institute of International Relations. However, Daniil dropped out of it to concentrate on Tennis.
He moved to France with his family later and hence, could speak French, Russian, and English. Medvedev married his girlfriend in September 2018 and his net worth is nearly $3 million.

Daniil Medvedev made his ATP singles debut at the 2016 Nice Open, losing to Guido Pella in straight sets and his maiden appearance in doubles the year before that. The Russian secured his first victory at the ATP World Tour at the 2016 Rioch Open, beating Horacio Zeballos in straight sets.
Controversy hit the world number two athlete’s career for the first time when the authorities disqualified from the second round of the Savannah Challenger event. The reason for that was Medvedev made debatable comments as the umpire ruled in favour of the opponent.
The world number two made it to his first ATP final at the 2016 Chennai Open and lost to Roberto Bautista in two sets. Nevertheless, he advanced 34 positions to 65 in the rankings. Medvedev recorded his first grand slam win in 2017 Wimbledon, stunning the then world number three Stan Wawrinka in the opening round.

Daniil Medvedev registered his fourth ATP title at the Sofia Open in 2019, beating Marton Fucsovics in straight sets. The 24-year old, who beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Monte Carlo Masters earlier, defeated him at the Western & Southern Open final by beating the Serbian again.
The Russian entered as the world number five in the 2019 US Open, reaching his first grand slam semii-final in that tournament. Nevertheless, he sustained a defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. Though the 24-year old could not achieve anything monumental in grand slams in 2020, Medvedev ran undefeated to win the ATP finals.
Medvedev overcame the likes of Alexander Zverev, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Diego Schwartzman, and finally Dominic Thiem in the final. By doing so, he became the first player to beat the top three in any ATP finals competition and the fourth to do it since its inception in 1990.
After winning the ATP Cup in February 2021, Daniil Medvedev reached the Australian Open final; however, Djokovic beat him. He ascended to world number two by winning the Open 13 Title in Marseille. Testing positive for COVID-19 ruled him out of the Monte Carlo Masters, but the 24-year old bounced back to reach the French Open quarter-finals.

Unfortunately, the Russian’s campaign ended in the fourth round as Hubert Hurkacz stunned the second seed. But he leads a strong Russian team in the ongoing Olympics.
Daniil Medvedev was already an overwhelming favourite against Sumit Nagal in their second-round clash. The latter’s maiden encounter with the Russian proved to be an unforgettable one as Medvedev defeated him 6-1 and 6-2. It gives him hope to salvage his mediocre year by going the distance in the global event.
