India’s Lakshya Sen displayed remarkable determination as he defeated Hong Kong China’s Angus Ng Ka Long in a hard-fought three-game match, advancing to the semi-finals of the inaugural King Cup International Badminton Open on Friday. The 23-year-old shuttler from Almora, who recently ended a title drought with a win at the Syed Modi Super 300 tournament in Lucknow, is one of the eight top players competing for the prestigious title in the three-day event.

Notably, the tournament, conceptualized by China’s legendary two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, has brought together some of the finest talents in the badminton world. Although the tournament isn’t a part of the BWF World Tour, it has a hefty prize money of $331,000.

India’s top-ranked men’s singles shuttler, Lakshya Sen, advanced to the semi-finals of the King Cup International Badminton Open 2024 in Shenzhen, China, after achieving his first-ever victory over Angus Ng Ka Long on Friday. Ranked 12th in the world, Sen overcame a challenging start to defeat the world No. 17 with a 10-21, 21-13, 21-13 score line.

Despite a slow beginning that saw him lose the opening game, the Indian shuttler displayed remarkable composure to bounce back, winning the second game convincingly. In the deciding game, Sen built an early three-point lead by the mid-game interval, capitalizing on his momentum. While Ng Ka Long’s speed kept the contest competitive, repeated unforced errors at the net proved costly, allowing Sen to seal his victory.

This marked Sen’s first triumph over the Hong Kong shuttler in their four encounters, with their last meeting at the Malaysia Masters in 2023 ending in Ng Ka Long’s favor. The King Cup tournament, initiated by two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, is exclusively a men’s singles event featuring eight players and does not offer ranking points, as it is not part of the BWF calendar.

In the semi-finals, Sen is set to face 18-year-old Chinese sensation Hu Zhe An, who upset former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore. Although ranked 183rd in the senior circuit, Hu Zhe An is the reigning junior world champion and holds the junior world No. 1 title. Adding to the excitement, an exhibition match between badminton legends Lin Dan and Taufik Hidayat has been scheduled for Saturday.
