Countdown is underway for the Khelo India Youth Games 2023, scheduled to commence this Friday in Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) represents the flagship sporting initiative of the Indian government, aiming to foster a sports culture among the nation’s youth. Notably, the upcoming sixth edition of this multi-disciplinary under-18 competition will run until January 31. KIYG adopts a team championship format, where the medals earned by individual athletes or teams contribute to the overall medal tally for their respective state or Union Territory (UT). Finally, the champion is determined by the state or UT with the highest number of gold medals at the conclusion of the event.
More than 5600 athletes from various parts of the country are set to vie for a total of 933 medals, comprising 278 gold, 278 silver, and 377 bronze, across 26 diverse sports during the 13-day span of the Games. The sporting events encompass both conventional disciplines like Football, Volleyball, and Badminton. Additionally, Silambam, a traditional martial art hailing from Tamil Nadu, will debut as a demonstration sport, marking a historic moment for the KIYG.
