The 11-day Khelo India University Games (KIUG) will begin on February 19 and feature 40,000 athletes from 200 institutes.

The fourth KIUG will be inaugurated in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the attendees via video.

Papon, a.k.a. singer Angaraag Mahanta, will make an appearance on the programme, a report in Free Press Journal suggests. The Center’s Khelo India programme, which aims to discover youthful talent across the nation and encourage grassroots sports, includes the KIUG. This event is simply another step in the direction of promoting sports culture and giving aspiring athletes a stage on which to display their abilities.

Competitions are set to take place in Guwahati and six Northeastern cities, with a total of 262 gold, 263 silver, and 297 bronze medals up for grabs among the participants in 20 sports categories.

When and where will the Khelo India University Games 2024 be held?

The Khelo India University Games 2023 will take place from February 19–29 in seven states. The events will mostly be held at different locations around Assam.

Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Tripura are the seven Northeastern Indian states that are holding the multi-sport competition for the first time.

Khelo India University Games 2024 disciples

Sports including athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, badminton, hockey, fencing, kabaddi, women’s football, tennis, mallakhamb, judo, and table tennis will all be held in Guwahati.

Four events; men’s boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, and yogasana; will take place in the remaining Northeastern states.

The fourth edition of the Khelo India University Games’ logo and mascot named “Ashtalakshmi” were presented at a ceremony by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It shows a butterfly with wings decorated with all-encompassing cultural motifs and colours, creating a visually arresting image of Northeast India’s varied beauty.

Guwahati will host 16 disciplines during the Khelo India University Games 2024, including athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, hockey, fencing, kabaddi, football, tennis, mallakhamb, judo, table tennis, boxing, and shooting and the rest of the Northeastern states will play host to four events, including men’s boxing, weightlifting, wrestling and yogasana.
