KIPG 2023 is the most recent addition to the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which encompasses the Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India University Games, and Khelo India Winter Games. Under the Khelo India initiative, five Khelo India Youth Games, three Khelo India University Games, and three Khelo India Winter Games have been successfully conducted. The program, initiated by the Government of India in 2017, has gained widespread success and support.

Athletes from 31 states and Union Territories, along with the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) as the 32nd team, are representing their regions at the inaugural Khelo India Para Games. The competition will feature a total of 175 gold, 175 silver, and 204 bronze medals over the eight-day event. Medal events are taking place in seven sports, including para athletics, para shooting, para archery, para football, para badminton, para table tennis, and para weightlifting.

The events are spread across three different Sports Authority of India (SAI) facilitiesโ€”the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Shooting Range in Tughlakabad, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Para badminton matches at the IG Stadium marked the beginning of KIPG 2023 on December 10, while the opening ceremony is scheduled for December 11. Both para football and table tennis events will conclude on December 17.
