Origin Story of KDB Cup
Kevin De Bruyne was born and raised in Drongen. He attended school there and was a member of KVV Drongen, one of the three football clubs in Drongen at the time. In 1999, he switched clubs to KAA Gent. He left his native hamlet at the age of 14 and moved to KRC Genk. In Genk, he attended boarding school.
His family remained in Drongen, including his parents and sister. In 2003, KVV Drongen and Eendracht Drongen 97 united to form KVE Drongen, a new merging club. Later on, in 2011, the club relocated to a new facility in Keiskant Sports Hall, just a short distance from Kevin De Bruyne’s childhood home.
During a conversation in 2014, Paul Naudts and Jeroen Verhille came to the agreement that Kevin De Bruyne and his family should be included in the club. It was their plan to host an international youth competition. KDB, a non-profit organisation, was founded on August 27, 2015. The first event would be held in 2016 by this autonomous non-profit organisation in partnership with VZW KVE Drongen.
