The three ringside judges scored it 97-93 and 96-93 for Taylor, with the third calling it a Serrano fight at 96-94, with the atmosphere from the reported sellout crowd of 19,187 being so loud that the referee struggled to hear the bell at the end of each of the 10 two-minute rounds.
Here at the Garden, Taylor’s boxing was at its most majestic, in a match that would not only establish both combatants’ legacies, but also the futures of many generations of boxers to come. However, in the fifth round, she was trapped down and subjected to Serrano’s vicious continuous onslaught.
Taylor’s comeback in the sixth could be remembered as the most crucial round of her career. And, thanks to a superb counter-left, she did enough to make the Puerto Rican challenger look like he needed a knockout as we reached the tenth and final frame.
Serrano fought as though she needed the win in the final round, and the result was a riveting open exchange that brought the fight to a close.
Winning co-promoter Eddie Hearn, who will collect $1,000,000 (plus odds) from opponent Jake Paul as a consequence of the fight, declared in the ring afterward that he wanted to give Taylor a homecoming fight in Ireland. A rematch in an Irish stadium following this spectacular bout between the two best pound-for-pound women’s boxers on the planet would be a red-hot ticket.
Purse & Payouts: Taylor vs. Serrano
Taylor will receive the majority of the PPV sales incentive, while Serrano will only get 30%. The Irish boxer’s total compensation will top $1.5 million if PPV sales reach the predicted amount. While Amanda will receive up to $475,000.
