Prediction
The unseeded Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend will compete for the championship against Krejcikova and Siniakova.
With a victory over No. 10 seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez of the United States and Ellen Perez of Australia on Thursday night, the No. 3 seeds from the Czech Republic advanced to the US Open women’s doubles final. The Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova duo have won five Grand Slam titles.
Krejcikova and Siniakova, former doubles World No. 1s, have won five Grand Slam doubles championships together (Roland Garros in 2018 and 2021, Wimbledon in 2018 and 2022, Australian Open in 2022), but before this year, they had never advanced to the US Open final.
All of that changed when the Czechs defeated one of the summer’s hottest teams, Melichar-Martinez and Perez, in two hours and sixteen minutes. In their previous three competitions, Melichar-Martinez and Perez had advanced to the final, they had placed second in Toronto and Cincinnati WTA 1000 tournaments before earning the Cleveland title. But in their semifinal match, Krejcikova and Siniakova converted seven of their 14 break opportunities, while Melichar-Martinez and Perez were 3-for-7.
Krejcikova and Siniakova got off to a great start by defeating their opponents in the opening game thanks to a successful Krejcikova return. From there, they sprinted to a 4-0 lead and eventually took the first set.
The Czechs were behind 5-2 in the second set when they almost won in straight sets after rallying all the way back to the tiebreak. A Perez volley sealed the victory in the breaker after Melichar-Martinez blasted a powerful return to establish a crucial 5-4 lead.
But in the end, Krejcikova and Siniakova won the match, breaking Perez at love to take the lead 2-1. The Czechs received a triple match point at 5-3 thanks to another strong Krejcikova return, and they successfully used the second of the three with a forehand winner down the line.
On the other hand, To overcome No.12 seeds Caroline Dolehide and Storm Sanders and get to the US Open women’s doubles final on Friday, Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend rallied from a set and a breakdown.
The unseeded American team defeated Sanders and Dolehide in 1 hour and 34 minutes after both of them had previously won many Grand Slam doubles matches throughout their junior careers.
Townsend’s triumphant comeback to the circuit following the birth of her son Adyn last year is capped by her appearance in her maiden Grand Slam final as a professional. Alongside Madison Keys, she also advanced to the semifinals of the women’s doubles competition at Roland Garros earlier this season.
The US Open women’s doubles final is McNally’s second in a row. She and Coco Gauff competed in the final in Flushing Meadows last year, but they were defeated by Samantha Stosur and Zhang Shuai. In the third set, McNally and Townsend broke serve to secure the match with a volley winner and then broke again in the clinching game, which was won by Townsend with an overhead winner.
Win or lose, Siniakova is expected to reclaim the top spot in WTA Doubles following the US Open. She and Krejcikova will be entering the match as slight favourites.
