Prediction
Karolina Pliskova, ranked 14th in the world, recovered after dropping the opening set to defeat Qinwen Zheng of China in Friday’s quarterfinal match. The Czech is now just one victory away from reaching the Canadian Open final twice in a row.
The runner-up from the previous year experienced an early break in the first set, but Zheng recovered to win the set. Pliskova broke early in the second set as well, but she was unable to maintain the lead for long as the Chinese player pulled even. However, Pliskova broke once more in the last game of the second set to force a decider.
Pliskova will compete in her first WTA 1000 tournament semifinal in 2022 and her second semifinal of the current campaign. The Czech, who has won 16 titles out of 32 matches, will try to advance to his or her eighth WTA 1000 final on Saturday.
A day after upsetting World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, Beatriz Haddad Maia pulled off another shock by defeating 2015 Champion and No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic.
Haddad Maia, who this week rose to a career-high ranking of 24, defeated the Swiss player 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and advanced to her first WTA 1000 semifinal. She did this by winning 75% of her points on her first serve, converting 4 of 6 break points, and saving 4 of 7. She was already the first Brazilian to make it to the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 tournament, and now she has made it to the semifinals.
Haddad Maia excelled on the grass courts this season, winning consecutive championships in Nottingham and Birmingham and placing second in Eastbourne. She has a season record of 40-15 thanks to those, a semifinal appearance in Monterrey, and victories and runner-up finishes in WTA 125k competitions.
With Pliskova edging out the opponent in three, this matchup should be extremely close.
