On Friday evening, the acclaimed Kannada actor Leelavathi, aged 85, breathed her last at a private hospital in Nelamangala, on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

Leelavathi, celebrated for her roles in more than 600 films across Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu languages, had been contending with age-related ailments. She was admitted to the hospital, where she ultimately passed away. Born in Beltangadi, Dakshina Kannada, Leela Kiran faced the loss of her parents at the age of 6.

Leelavathi, originally named Leela Kiran and born in Belthangadi, Karnataka, nurtured a passion for acting from a young age. Commencing her artistic journey on the stage, she entered the world of cinema in the late 1940s-1950s with movies like Chanchala Kumari. Her breakthrough occurred in 1958 with Subbaiah Naidu’s Bhakta Prahlada.

Notable credits encompass Ranadheera Kanteerava, Rani Honnamma, Gejje Pooje, Mana Mecchida Madadi, Vathsalya, Sipayi Ramu, Bhakta Kumbara, & Doctor Krishna.

Leelavathi achieved the rare distinction of collaborating with Rajkumar in multiple films, playing diverse roles such as a heroine, daughter (Bhoodana), daughter-in-law (Kittur Chennamma), sister (Vathsalya), sister-in-law (elder brother’s wife in Premamayi and younger brother’s wife in Kalitharu Henne), paternal aunt (Shravana Banthu), and mother-in-law (Vasantha Geetha, Naa Ninna Mareyalare, and Jwaalamukhi).

In 2000, Leelavathi received the Dr. Rajkumar Lifetime Achievement Award from the Karnataka government. Tumkur University bestowed an honorary doctorate upon her in 2008. She leaves behind her son Vinod Raj, who entered the acting scene in 1987 with Dance Raja Dance. The concluding rituals for Leelavathi will occur at her residence in Nelamangala. Her farmhouse will be open to the public for viewing her body.
