Ambubachi Mela significance
The Ambubachi Mela is the most significant festival of the Kamakhya temple and usually takes place in June each year. The Ambubachi Mela is celebrated to mark the annual menstruation of the Hindu goddess Kamakhya. This festival marks the sacredness of feminine energy and fertility, which are both essential elements of life and creation.
During the time of celebration, devotees seek blessings, perform rituals, and commune with the divine goddess. It starts from the seventh to the tenth day of the Hindu month of “Asadha”. Throughout the festival, the temple doors are closed because people believe that Goddess Kamakhya is menstruating. On the twelfth day, the temple priest ceremonially opens the doors, following which a large fair takes place at the temple premises. The Ambubachi Mela provides attendees and devotees with a rare insight into Tantric traditions.
