Kavitha is the daughter of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) and K. Shobha. She was born on March 13, 1978, in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana). Kavitha follows Hinduism and her caste in Velama.
She has one sibling, K.T. Rama Rao, who is the minister of municipal administration and urban development, industries and commerce, and information technology in Telangana.

Before returning to India, she worked as a software engineer in the US. She stayed at home for a while after coming back. She established a beauty salon as a first-generation female business owner and ran it up till she joined the Telangana movement.
- In 2014, she won the general election from the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency with a majority of over 1,64,184.
- In 2015, she became a member of Parliament for the Estimates Committee, the Standing Committee on Commerce, and the Consultative Committee. Was a member of the Ministry of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water, and Sanitation.
- In 2019, she contested the MP 2019 general election from Nizamabad. However, she lost to Arvind Dharmapuri with a margin of 70,875 votes.
- In October 2020, she was elected to the Member of Legislative Council from the Nizamabad Local Authorities Constituency. She won 727 votes out of 823.
- In 2021, Kavitha was elected from the Nizamabad Local Authorities constituency in the biennial polls to the Telangana Legislative Council for the second time.
- In January 2022, she took the oath as MLC.
