Previously in Kaiju No. 8 Chapter 89
Beginning with a flashback to Soshiro Hoshina’s upbringing, chapter 89 of Kaiju No. 8 reveals that the Hoshina family looks up to Souichirou, Soshiro’s older brother. Soshiro added confirmation of this by saying he had always imitated his ideal older brother poorly. Next, the story jumped back to the present, where we saw that Soshiro and No. 10 had finally settled on No. 12 as the definitive version of No. 10.
When No. 12 moved to attack, Soshiro reflected that he and No. 10 are both “cheap imitations.” Fortunately, Soshiro was able to avoid the catastrophic attack, and he later advised No. 10 that they should kill it to prevent further casualties. He then ordered Konomi Okonogi to release “Case 7,” which resulted in the deployment of multiple equipment pods from a nearby chopper to the battlefield.
During this process, Soshiro reflected on the fact that 83% seemed to be the limit of the released force he and No. 10 are capable of. Similarly, he insisted that a strategy shift was necessary, disclosing that Soshina intended to adopt his brother’s single-blade technique. When the scene returned to the present, Soshiro had severed one of No. 12’s arms. The flashback had begun when Soshiro ordered Okonogi to build him a new single-blade sword before the current combat.
