Following the deal, Verlander will get to reunite with former Detroit Tigers teammate Max Scherzer.
The Mets previously signed Scherzer to a three-year, $130 million contract just last year. It was the highest annual average contract for any player in baseball history, which Verlander now equals.
Justin Verlander The Hot Target
Verlander’s former team, the Houston Astros, were also interested in retaining him, but could not match with the salary that the Mets were offering.
Moreover, The Los Angeles Dodgers were also in hot pursuit of Verlander. However, they were also not willing to pay Verlander with the fees offered by the Mets. The Mets, who were also after deGrom, lost to the Texas Rangers last week, following which, they quickly turned their attention towards signing Verlander.
Career Stats And Records
Justin Verlander, who is currently 39-years-old, lead with an 18-4 record and a 1.75 ERA this season. His 1.75 ERA is the lowest by an AL pitcher throughout a full season ever since Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez accomplished the same back in 2000. Impressively, he managed to do all that while suffering from elbow issues and his recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Verlander has also won two Cy Young awards during his three full seasons with the Astros. He has also won the World Series championships twice with the Houston Astros.
Verlander also leads all currently active pitchers with 244 wins and 3,198 strikeouts throughout his 17 MLB seasons. More recently, Justin Verlander allowed one run and five hits in five innings during Houston’s 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The match was during the Game 5 of the most recent 2022 World Series. His net worth stands at $150 million.
Mets Set Their Sights On More Signings
Veteran infielder Carlos Baerga, was the first person to report on Verlander and Mets’ new contract. The former player shared the news on his Instagram account that Verlander was signing a two-year deal for $86.8 million. Although his report came true, it was just $200,000 off the confirmed deal.
The Mets however, are not done with Verlander as sources indicate that they are still after one more free agent. They are however, looking past San Francisco Giants ace Carlos Rodon, who is demanding a minimum six-year contract.
Instead, the Mets are currently focusing on mid-tier starters like Chris Bassitt, Taijuan Walker, Johnny Cueto, Jameson Taillon, or Jose Quintana.
