JUST IN: Roger Federer Withdraws From French Open 2021 Owing To Injury

The 20-time Grand slam Champion, Roger Federer who returned to the court of tennis after absence from the sport throughout the 2020 tournaments has withdrawn from the ongoing 2021 French Open.

Federer withdrew citing his physical state. The Swiss Maestro played a marathon 4-set match against Dominik Koepfer yesterday and was scheduled to play Matteo Berrettini in the Fourth Round on Monday.

Following his latest triumph against the World No.8, Federer suggested that he might not be able to continue to play in his next Round of 16 match which regards to concerns of his knee.

To bring everyone on the same page, Federer has had two surgical procedures done upon his knee last year.

As stated earlier by Roger Federer as well, his aim is to return to full fitness before the start of Wimbledon 2021. For which he has relentlessly made his return.

He said in a statement, “After discussion with my team, I have decided to pull my name from the French open today.”

“After two surgical procedures and a year of rehabilitation, it is important that I listen to my body and make sure I do not push myself to hard on the road to recovery,” he added.

The French Open was only the third tournament Federer has played this year after Doha and Geneva. Earlier in the tournament he scored wins over Denis Istomin and former US Open champion Marin Cilic.

As a result of Federer’s withdrawal, Matteo Berrettini has become the first player to seal a spot in the last eight of the men’s draw.

It is the first time he has reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and only the second time he has done so at a Grand Slam. He reached the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2019.

It remains to be seen whether Rafael Nadal is able to break his jinx and can surpass Roger Federer’s ultimate tally of 20 Grand Slams by winning the French open in 2021.
