Fontaine set a World Cup scoring record by scoring 13 goals in 1958 in Sweden. He received the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup in recognition of his performance in Sweden.

“RIP Just Fontaine. A legend of French football who has sadly left us and a sad day for all at Paris Saint-Germain, a club he led to the first division 50 years ago.”

Just Fontaine was a well-known French footballer. He has been in the news because he passed away recently at the age of 89.

His full name was Just Louis Fontaine. He was born in Marrakech, French Morocco, on August 18, 1933. His father’s name was Delphin Louis Martin Fontaine, who was French, and his mother’s name was Marie Dolores Ortega, who was Spanish. He also has six siblings.

His height was 1.74 meters, or 5 feet 9 inches. He died on March 1, 2023, in Toulouse, France. At the time of his death, he was 89 years old.

Just Fontaine had been married to his wife Arlette for more than 60 years and the couple have two children together.

His career

With USM Casablanca in Morocco, Just Fontaine started playing football professionally in 1950. Afterward, he relocated to France and joined Nice, where he played for the rest of his career, tallying an amazing 165 goals in 200 matches.

In 1953, he made his debut for the French national team, kicking off his international career. By scoring 13 goals in just six games, including four against West Germany in the third-place playoff, Fontaine helped France advance to the semifinals of the 1958 FIFA World Cup, which was played in Sweden.

His 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup still hold the record for the most scored by a single player in a World Cup competition. After the tournament, Just Fontaine announced his retirement from international play after making 21 appearances for France and scoring 30 goals.

Due to a persistent knee problem, he was forced to leave the game of professional football in 1962 at the age of 28.

Fontaine functioned as a football manager and the French Professional Football League president after he retired. In honor of his outstanding efforts in the 1958 World Cup, he was inducted into the FIFA World Cup Hall of Fame in 2004.
