2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 7 – Julius Baer Generation Cup Quarterfinal Results, semi-final Schedule, & Latest Standings
After Liem Le defeated Hans Niemann 2.5-1.5 in the quarterfinals of the Julius Baer Generation Cup, fans won’t get to see a Carlsen vs. Niemann final. Magnus did make progress; after dropping the first game, he came back to defeat Levon Aronian 3-1. In the semi-final, Carlsen will now face Vincent Keymer, who defeated Praggnanandhaa. After winning a close match against Christopher Yoo, Arjun Erigaisi will take on Le in the semifinals.
Le and Niemann engaged in a dramatic match in which each player earned one victory in the first two games before the third game ended in a draw. Due to Niemann’s inability to determine the best way to deal with White’s passer, the Vietnamese GM was successful in proceeding to the semifinals after winning decider fourth game with the white pieces.
Arjun Erigaisi and Christopher Yoo were tied after four games with two wins apiece and hence, a blitz play-off took place to determine a winner. Indian youngster Arjun managed to win the first blitz game and later, held his nerves to earn a draw in second play-off. Following these results, their match ended with score of 3.5-2.5 in Arjun’s favor and also allowed him to advance to semi-finals.
